There seems to be a lot of debate concerning the leadfree capabilities of the various factory V8 cylinder heads. As far as we are aware the following obtains:
- MGB GT and Range Rover pre SD1 - Leadfree.
- Rover P6 3.5 - Not Leadfree.
- SD1 and Range Rover - Leadfree.
The biggest problem is determining whether the MGB GT or Range Rover heads are original....the only way we can tell is by grinding the lower part of the exhaust seat insert ( where we cause no damage to the function of the seat! ) to see if the inserts are hard or not. The inserts can be changed for the hardened variety if necessary.
We feel the best way forward with the V8's is to utilise SD1 type cylinder heads. These have larger inlet and exhaust valves than the pre-SD1 heads.
Our most popular conversion is to the Econotune Specification. This involves cutting the seats using three angles and to the correct diameter, which the factory seemed to omit!! The valve throats are opened up by nearly three millimetres which allows a lot more air to enter the cylinders.....they really should have left the factory like this!! The power improvements and revability are stunning - free revving to around 5800 rpm with a standard camshaft and 30+ bhp improvement throughout most of the rev range, approximately 45+ bhp more than the original MGB GT V8 heads.
The Econotune Heads are at home in an otherwise standard engine, giving significant improvement in economy as well as serious power! The heads are equally at home in a fire breathing, monster- cammed and carburetted engine.
For Race use we offer fully modified cylinder heads; we do not recommend these for road use.
